Family systems theory is the philosophy & therapeutic technique which explores the dynamics of a family. FST explores ways that the whole of the family is greater than the sum of the parts. Salvador Munichin (Structural) & Murray Bowen (Interactional) were two pioneers of the therapeutic approach. Salvador Munichin has a structural approach to family systems and he believed that the family's structure consists of recurrent patterns of interaction that its members develop over time, as they accommodate to each other. (http://www.minuchincenter.org/structural_family_therapy) Murray Bowen believed in 8 core concepts within family dynamics which is due to families ability to profoundly affect the members’ thoughts, feelings, and actions. Families are seen as living under the same “emotional skin.” (https://thebowencenter.org/theory/)
