Behavioral Activation (BA) is a specific CBT skill. It can be a treatment all by itself, or can be used alongside other CBT skills such as cognitive restructuring. Behavioral activation helps us understand how behaviors influence emotions (https://medicine.umich.edu/sites/default/files/content/downloads/Behavioral-Activation-for-Depression.pdf). Behavioral Activation increases the client’s engagement in activities that provide enjoyment and or a sense of accomplishment. With this approach the client is supposed to behave first, feel later. They are to act according to the plan or goal, not on how they are feeling. This helps clients connect with their values and utilize structure and activities to live a valued life (https://dsamh.utah.gov/pdf/OA%20Conference/Behavioral%20Activation.pdf).
